Another Seth Godin post worth thinking about. When organizations write to employees or customers, the writing is often unnecessarily complicated. He gives a great example.

I think part of the tradeoff is the level of detail. The organization wants to be seen as providing lots of information, often to answer questions that may come in. Less often, they want to misdirect the reader away from an uncomfortable question.

The majority of readers just want the basics. A few will want more detail. Write so the most important points are clear. Be ready, available, and willing to answer questions when they come in.

Related to the example he gives is a sign I have seen in my mom’s building. “The elevator is broken and service has been called.” Even more brief, but it conveys that it isn’t working and someone is going to take care of it. The majority of people in the building like those signs.
