The Flabby Guys Football League (FGFL) was started about 30 years ago. Yes, we were flabby even back then. A bunch of weekend warriors, we have probably had over a hundred different guys playing.
Also, yes, there have been trips to the ER. My personal favorite was long ago when Wolfie got smacked in the cheek by another player’s head. I had thrown a long high deep ball that led to the collision so I felt a bit responsible for it. Not of us had anything like a first aid kit in our cars. The best thing we could come up with was a diaper for my one year old. It was clean so Wolfie had that going for him. With the diaper held to his cheek, we went to Urgent Care. He called his wife who provided him no sympathy. The intake just shook her head and muttered something about weekend warriors so that was on brand. Fortunately, it only took a few stitches and he was playing the following week.
Wolfie has been the only player to keep playing this entire time. I made it up until a few years ago before I bowed out for no good reason. I would blame my heart attacks, but I had become a no-show a few years before that. Maybe if I hadn’t stopped…?
Anyway, this past week, we made it to the big time. And by big time, I mean major (local) TV coverage. Channel 5 (KSTP) Minnesota Live included the FGFL in one of their segments. The video is below. My sole contribution was shooting the video (note the smooth zoom at the end).
