There are almost a dozen heavily used messaging systems, including basic text messaging. Each has different features and interoperability capabilities.
The people we need to communicate with use a different combination of those systems. For each person, we have to know what they use if we want to communicate with them.
Whatever app we use for contacts doesn’t keep track of that.
One organization can have multiple community apps with fragmented user bases. The same information doesn’t show up in each place. Either we miss out or have to put in extra work to see everything.
We are flexible to some degree but there is a limit to what we are able or willing to learn or use.
What technology we use is already impacting what we see and here thanks to the various algorithms driving us. The communication problem only makes this worse.
It’s going to get worse before it gets better.
