Childcraft Books: Earl of Sandwich

Anyone else remember these? We had a set of these growing up and we read them all the time. It was basically an encyclopedia written for children.

I was thinking about these books this morning as I was eating a leftover club sandwich. (It was from last night, it had really good turkey, cheese, and bacon and was delicious warmed up. Don’t judge.)

I remembered the story about how the “sandwich” got its name. Some English dude with the title Earl of Sandwich.

While the English word does appear to come from this person, he clearly didn’t invent the sandwich. Most likely it was some normal person who first put meat between bread. But that doesn’t make a good story and doesn’t get a thing named after you.
