Peer pressure ordering

A bunch of us were out for dinner this evening. A common question came up: What are you ordering? That, and a million versions of the same, gets asked at many restaurants and many meals. Maybe I’m with the only people that do this, but I doubt that.

I know I ask that when there are lots of good options to choose from. Hearing what others are ordering can get me off the fence.

There must be something social going on here. We are usually with people we like when we go out to dinner. We tend to respect the opinions of the people we like, so maybe this is our way of asking someone more decisive in the moment to help us decide.

Sometimes, it turns into comments like “You should get the (whatever), because I know you like that.” Not good if you are trying to change what you eat.

Most of the time I just say “I don’t know yet.” when people ask me. Let them make up their own mind. I have enough trouble making up my mind.

Unless there is crème brûlée on the menu. Always order the crème brûlée.
