S’mores are a waste of ingredients

I know, I know, the title is click-bait. Designed to get people to click and read some sort of lunatic ramblings. How could anyone not like s’mores? Well, obviously, there is no universally loved food, so clearly some don’t like it. Maybe they will click because someone also doesn’t like s’mores.

The weird part is that I like s’mores. But not a lot. When they come out at the campfire, I usually pass. Toasting the marshmallow is fun. Assembling it is a challenge, especially if you forgot to stage the graham cracker and chocolate before you started. Or you did, but someone else used yours when they forgot to stage theirs. These are miscreants of the highest order. Stage you own damn s’more.

I don’t make them for the simple reason that I prefer the ingredients individually. I can eat an entire sleeve of graham crackers straight out of the box. Just the right amount of sweet and crunch. If there happens to be some vanilla frosting (NOT chocolate!) left over from some party, that makes it even better. Although then I can only eat half a sleeve before falling into a sugar coma that last three days.

Then, there is the marshmallow. Fresh out of a newly opened bag, they are light and fluffy like no other confection. My sister makes homemade marshmallows and, somehow, they stay light and fluffy for months in the bag she uses. Her toasted coconut ones are the world’s best marshmallows. I wouldn’t dream of wasting them on a s’more. We shall not speak of the half bag of marshmallows that was open a month ago and stored in the cupboard with a pathetic little clip, or worse, a rubber band. Those do not deserve to be called marshmallows.

The is, well, chocolate. Hershey bars hit the right spot on occasion. But I prefer to mainline my chocolate, not mix it with other things. Most s’more evenings, I ignore the chocolate and focus on the graham crackers and marshmallows.

So I love it when there are s’mores around the campfire, but I rarely eat one. I’ll be over in the corner crunching on graham crackers and enjoying fresh marshmallows.

P.S. I have never written the word marshmallows so many times. It looks weird. I misspelled it about half the time which is also weird.
