Every time the celebrity dies, people start talking about the rule of three. The claim is that it always seems that celebrities die in threes.
Starting with TV and radio we massively increased the number of “celebrities”. With our ubiquitous media, we have caused thousands of names to be known by some portion of the public. Radio and TV started a long time ago. Movies and the music industry compounded it. And they are starting to die.
So the chance of a public figure that we know of dying in any given day week or month is pretty high. In any given window, there will always be someone we have heard of dying. This goes up, of course, the older we are.
The reality is celebrities are now constantly dying and we just noticed the ones we particularly care about. The rule of three is just who we happen to notice.
