Field of Sadness

We were driving back from Milwaukee the other day and stopped at a casino. Me to give Luna a chance to walk around and do her business and Joyce to verify that the slot machines were still on their (terrible) payout ratios. (Spoiler: they were).

Luna and I drove around back to a park and started walking. We came to an abandoned baseball diamond. A small one, probably for Little League. It hasn’t been used all year from the looks of things. The gravel infield was raked smooth as if a game was about to be played. But the weeds covering it and surrounding the bases and pitcher’s mound made it clear no cleats had slid safely into any base in a long time.

There was a tall fence protecting the no longer present bleachers. They were disassembled and piled outside the field.

I know these things happen. Something that is used, stops being used. An organized sport stops being organized. Maybe not enough kids wanted to play.

I didn’t learn the story of that abandoned baseball field. But I can’t imagine it being anything other than sad.
