When I started publishing books, I thought about branding (yes, it’s a business). At the first couple of conferences I went to, I saw authors using clothing as part of their brand. Fedoras, costumes, special jackets.
That felt right to me and I chose a flannel shirt.
A few years later, after I had used it in all the photos and it appeared at a number of conferences with it, I realize the flaw in my plan. I only had one of those shirts and they were no longer manufactured.
My wife thought I should change the shirts to something current that I could buy several of them. I didn’t want to change the shirt cuz I’d already started using it and I really like the shirt.
Recently she discovered a new shopping site for used clothes. And, lo and behold, she found the right sides of my shirt. She is awesome.
So now I have my current shirt and two spares. Much happiness. Piccolo. Yes I dry clean my flannel shirts. Some of us take our flannel seriously.
